Thanks to Professor Court Carney for joining me to discuss his new book, Riding With the Devil: Nathan Bedford Forrest in Myth and Memory (Louisiana State University Press, 2024). The book offers a concise and thought-provoking analysis of how Forrest has been remembered and commemorated right through to the removal of the Forrest monument in Memphis in 2017.

Our conversation touched on a number of themes in the book, but there is plenty more to explore and I encourage you to do so. Reckoning With the Devil is not only a thorough study of Forrest’s memory, but is also a wonderful introduction to the broader subject of Civil War memory.
