Really enjoyed that conversation. Interesting that he almost titled it “the Ally.” I wonder if he less than stellar record post war dissuaded him. Either way, I agree with you both that his attitude towards letting those seeking liberation/respect lead themselves is something we in the modern world’s majority still struggle with, and is an admirable trait . Would have liked more discussion of his time with Brown, but I understand you had limited time and a lot to cover. Either way, well done

Awesome. I’m listening to your interview now. I read David Reynolds on John Brown (amazing, if you haven’t read it) and of all the Secret 6, he is the most positive about Higginson. Looking forward to the interview

Oh yes. Egerton does a great job exploring Higginson's connection to Brown through the Secret Six and why he refused to accompany him to Virginia. One of the things that Egerton emphasizes is that of all the members, Higginson was the only one who refused to hide in the face of possible arrest and numerous threats of violence. Well worth reading.
