I wonder how many African Americans were members of the United Confederate Veterans. I'd wager none, because real confederates never considered them soldiers.

Exactly. It's pretty clear how real Confederates understood the presence of enslaved men in the army if you spend enough time in the pages of CONFEDERATE VETERAN magazine.
