Anyone who has followed the debate surrounding the history of the Confederate monument in Arlington National Cemetery has had to sift through a great deal of misinformation. To help us better understand this history, I am joined by Dr. Karen Cox, who teaches at the University of North Carolina—Charlotte. Dr. Cox literally wrote the book on the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and their efforts to erect monuments across the South, including Arlington National Cemetery.
Kevin, I was quite struck by your statement of “forgive and forget.” The lost cause insists that the rebels be forgiven for trying to destroy the country, and to forget that it was about the right to keep fellow human beings enslaved. Well done.
I grade it an F in Semiotics. .Of course I had to laugh at Karen Cox's statement people need to know that the monument is not being destroyed'. However and one of her other YouTube lectures she mentions that only 100 statues are destroyed and we've got 700 to go. It makes it quite clear that she wants them all removed and of course, if Stony becomes governor of Virginia Every monument in Virginia will go down.
