On this inauguration day I find myself, once again, reading Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, which was delivered 160 years ago this coming March.
This essay is a gift of comfort on this upsetting day. It also reminds me to focus on the wonderful legacy of Dr. King and not the man being inaugurated today. It also reminds me that we have survived worse.
A perfect reflection for today. "With malice toward none" was a beautiful expression in that moment. Lincoln was a great political wordsmith. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for sharing. Think I will stick to the deep scholarship available on the subject of slavery and secession.
I’ve read it twice today. And cried both times.

You are very welcome, Mike. Thanks for reading.
Thank you for sharing this! I've been looking to the Civil war to make sense of now and thoroughly enjoy your posts.
I don't comment often but I read every one.
Thank you for the work you do for us 💙
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for taking the time to read my newsletter.
For those who haven’t read it, I strongly recommend Ronald White’s Lincoln Greatest Speech. Great book.
It's a wonderful book and you can read it in one day.
