I think you and your readers will be interested in a book on Journalism in the Civil War Era by two media historians. I found the book revelatory. I posted an interview with the authors. https://jimbuie.substack.com/p/journalism-in-the-civil-war-era

Just when I resolved that with Covid ended, I'd end my indulgent deep-dive into my lifelong favorite battlefield, Gettysburg, ... then KML just had to put near the top of this alluring list, someone finding a Pietta revolver on York Road. I am imagining that one of JEB Stuart's or Jenkins' troopers lost it when trotting over to East Cavalry Field on July 3 1863.

I'll be up all night pondering this...fortunately, it's already 6:33 AM so I can minimize this particular loss.

BTW, just finished reading James I Robertson's hagiography of Ambrose Powell Hill. This is the general that let Henry Heth go shopping for shoes. Anybody know if Robertson and his wife (she still lives) were FFVs? This little tome had all the hallmarks of Douglas Southall Freeman's 4-volume worship-ography of Bobby Lee, which so re-stamped the Lost Cause on Woodrow Wilson (an FFV Wanna-Be) and the nation.

HOW-SOME-EVER, I cannot let loose of KML's question/answer, that the Rebs were in PA to shop at Walmart.... Their (about 75,000) entire shopping foray (except for payment proffered in CSA paper!) was what used to be known as the "five finger discount", apparently reinforced by that Pietta revolver.

FFV wanna-be... FOFLOL!! Excellent description of the most racist president of the 20th century.

Thank you! ....I worry that the USA is destined to have a comparably racist president once a century into the future. I fear we're not out of the woods. The one who also owns the disgrace of being the only convicted rapist-president, could succeed at matching Wilson's two terms.

History may be cyclical, but America now demonstrates how to wander in circles. At least: Moses only wasted 40 years to walk in circles in a comparatively tiny wilderness.

We're all in this together, to quote another Substack opinion leader.

Wow, that interview about the Valentine Museum's Sculpting History is great. What a powerful exhibit that must be given the history of the space and the artist. It so echoes everything you write about, Kevin, regarding context and understanding. I notice they plan to keep it as a semi-permanent exhibit so I hope that I can see it in the next couple of years on an east coast sojourn.

Hi Paul,

It's a dynamite interview and thanks for the kind words. I need to check to see if there is a digital component of the exhibit.

My husband and I are in Richmond this month and plan to see this exhibit either this weekend or next week. It looks amazing! I'm also meeting Chris Graham at the Civil War Museum, he's kindly offered to give us a tour. If you get down to Richmond before the end of February, you should see the Dawoud Bey exhibition, "Elegy," at the VMFA. His photographs "contemplate the harrowing journeys and human realities of the Virginia slave trail, Louisiana plantations, and Ohio’s Underground Railroad."

You are in for a real treat accompanying Chris through the museum. Enjoy.
