Visited The Mariner’s Museum today, in Newport News, Virginia. Their exhibit on the USS Monitor, and the recovery of the turret and many other artifacts is excellent and not to be missed! https://www.marinersmuseum.org/

Yay! I hadn’t been before but my husband grew up in the area and it was a regular school field trip for him. Have you been since the arrival of the Monitor turret and all the great exhibits about the battle between it and the CSS Virginia?

oh yeah. It's about 10 minutes away from me, and my husband teaches at CNU (across the street).

Hi Kevin - Otis is looking well and I agree that he could bring on world peace. If OK, I want to encourage your readers to visit Franklin TN and to take advantage of the specialty tours they offer. I made the trip to Franklin last week from Indiana and one of the tours I did was with Eric Jacobson about the Lost Cause and the Legacy of the Confederacy. I happened to be only guest who had purchased a ticket for that day and it was less of a tour and more of an almost 90 minute conversation with Eric about the Lost Cause, the impact of the UDC on education, and on into our political environment. Even for those of your subscribers who may not have much interest in the battles themselves, Eric and the folks in Franklin have a number of tours which explore other aspects of the era. Last summer, with my wife and our adult kids, we did the Enslaved Persons tour and it generated some amazingly adult conversation between my sons that evening. Plus, Franklin is a pretty cool place with lots of good eats.

I couldn't agree more. Eric is a wonderful historian. His work in furthering discussion around the Confederate monument in Franklin and his work to add the new USCT monument to the square has helped his community move forward.

Hi Kevin, I was mildly stunned to read your comment about Professor Gannon, the unmarked mass grave at Olustee, and the ongoing project with her students at the University of Central Florida. I confess that as an avid student of the war in Florida and considering that Olustee is one of my favorite little battlefields, I was not even aware of this grave. Furthermore, with UCF being my alma mater, I want to follow this much more closely, maybe even volunteer in some small way if possible. Thank you for pointing this out to all of us.

Glad to hear you saw this post. You should definitely contact Barbara through her university email address. She is very easy going and I suspect would welcome your interest and offer to get involved in some way.
