I've always felt terribly sorry for Shaw's mother, who was quoted in Ken Burns' documentary as asking what she had done that God had been so good to her as to allow her to see a day when Shaw commanded African American troops. I know about Shaw's father's brave response to his son's death, but wonder about his mother's reaction.
