Welcome to Civil War Memory

In November 2005 I wrote my first blog post at Civil War Memory. That post changed everything. Writing online over the past two decades has opened up new opportunities for me, from publishing to public speaking. Best of all it has put me in touch with fellow teachers and history enthusiasts from across the country and beyond, who share my passion for history and education.

My hope is that continuing this journey here on Substack will help to connect me to a whole new community.

What you can expect here:

  • commentary about issues related to the continued debate over how the Civil War era is remembered and commemorated

  • book reviews

  • updates on my current research project exploring the life of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw

  • reflections on the current debate over history education, including the 1619 Project and Critical Race Theory

  • …and much, much more

Thanks for stopping by.

Let’s get started…
