"Shaw fought for his own reasons. What they built together was not a communion of purpose but a working alliance, and it proved powerful enough to help transform Northern opinion about Black soldiers and to push the war further down the road toward freedom."

This is one of the best stated sentences I've read this year. Huzzah!

Having walked by the Saint-Gaudens sculpture countless times over my decades living in Boston and now residing in Charleston, this story/subject is of particular interest to me. I so much appreciate your discipline and diligence in researching and articulating history without embellishment or hyperbole.

I need to order another copy of Searching for Black Confederates. I attended a lecture recently and the speaker referred to enslaved patriots in the South that fought alongside of the Confederate troops. I’m going to gift him a copy of your book. 😆
