Remembering Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts on the 160th Anniversary of Battery Wagner

Thanks to all of you who shared part of your evening to remember and reflect on the 160th anniversary of the assault on Battery Wagner, led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts. It was nice to be able to do so at the exact moment in which the assault took place.

Thankfully, I remembered to hit the record button so those of you who couldn’t attend will be able to view the presentation at your convenience.

During the Q&A one of you asked about Glory and though I did forget to hit record during my previous discussion about the movie I am including an earlier presentation on the film and its history.

There was another question about the profile of the 54th, including the occupations, age, and birthplace of the men who served in the regiment. I highly recommend the book, Hope & Glory: Essays on the Legacy of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, edited by Martin Blatt, Thomas Brown and Donald Yacovone. All of the essays are well worth reading, but Edwin Redkey’s chapter provides an excellent overview of the regiment.

Hope you enjoy the presentation and please let me know if you have any additional questions.
