Remembering Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry
Join me for a special presentation on the 160th anniversary of the assault on Battery Wagner.
My apologies for this late announcement. Somehow the 160th anniversary of the assault on Battery Wagner by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (July 18, 1863) crept up on me without notice.
I am certainly not going to allow it to pass without some kind of recognition.
With that in mind, I am going to host a discussion about the assault and how Shaw and the 54th have been memorialized on July 18 at 7PM EST. This presentation will be open to all paid subscribers.
Don’t worry. You have plenty of time to upgrade if you would like to join us. Your paid subscription will give you access not only to this presentation, but to all of this site’s content. It will also support my book project about Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts.
If it helps I can offer you a 20% discount for a one-year subscription. As always, thank you.
This presentation will give you a sneak peek into some of the content that I am including in my Shaw biography, the working of which is, A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.
I was hoping to complete this book in time for the 160th anniversary, but unfortunately COVID and other factors forced me to set a new timeline. My goal is to have a completed manuscript to the University of North Carolina Press by the end of the year.
Please let me know if you have any questions. The comments section below is open. You will receive an email with a zoom link on Monday evening.
I am looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday at 7PM EST.
Wish I could attend, but it will take place in the middle of my night. Sure it will be excellent, nevertheless.
Pleasant zooming!
My people regard the 54th and the USCTs as the unfortunate antecedent of our own WW2 segregated 100th and 442nd infantry units in which two uncles and father-in-law fought. A younger uncle was just old enough to enlist in the MIS and participate in the Battle for Manila. (My dad also enlisted in the MIS while in Manzanar, but was found 4F due to recent TB.)
I would participate but I decline to Zoom.
