Thanks to Ashley Luskey for joining me to preview the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College’s annual conference, which will take place on June 13-18. Ashley is the assistant director of CWI. In addition to managing the many projects and programs supported by the institute, Ashley is also working on a book manuscript titled, The Last Confederate Christmas: Slaveholding Women, Ritual, and Authority in the Confederate Capital.
CWI’s annual conference is the premier annual event for serious students of the Civil War. The five-day conference includes lectures, dine-ins as well as time in the classroom and especially on the battlefield.
You have access to some of the most talented historians in the field and it’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet people who share your deep interest in this history.
This year’s conference will be bitter sweet. Last summer CWI director Peter Carmichael—our dear friend, colleague, mentor, and teacher—passed away unexpectedly. He was a brilliant scholar and a fierce advocate for programs that engaged the public. An entire day of the conference features programs that recognize his many contributions to the field.
I hope you will consider participating this year or next year. It is a unique opportunity to begin your serious study of the Civil War era as well as for those of you who wish to deepen your understanding. Either way it is an experience that you will not soon forget.

I look forward to seeing you in Gettysburg this summer.
