I’ve relied heavily on published primary sources, specifically published diaries and letter collections, for my current project on Robert Gould Shaw. His published letters, edited by Russell Duncan, have been incredibly helpful.

During the height of COVID I ordered a fairly large number of published primary sources to further my research.

Of course, you can now find a wealth of archival material digitized and even transcribed for public use, but I still enjoy holding a book and the ease with which I can take notes in the margins.
