Announcement

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the book group meeting this past Sunday evening. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday July 9 at 7Pm EST. Instead of reading a book we are going to meet to discuss the movie Glory. I thought it might be fun to mix things up a bit. Many of you have seen it, but if not you can find it on a number of streaming services. I am going to talk for a bit at the beginning about how the movie stacks up against the history.

News

A number of people have written recently about the Civil War/Reconstruction connections to the ongoing debate about the debt crisis. Here is a piece by Roger Lowenstein from today’s New York Times.

A new book about Lincoln’s religious views has just been published by Joshua Zeitz, which looks interesting. Here is a sneak peek from Politico.
