As I mentioned in my last post, I am working away at revising the manuscript in hopes of submitting it to the publisher at the end of the month. One of the things I decided to do was write a short epilogue that offers some final thoughts and perspective. It is centered around a photograph of a Black family in Atlanta, Georgia that was taken around 1920 by the photographer Lewis Hine.
It’s a fascinating image that offers a clear reminder of the place of Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts in the collective memory of African Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Please keep in mind that this is a rough draft, but please feel free to share your feedback and please don’t hold back. Share your criticisms. The entire manuscript is going to go through a blind peer review process, so there will be plenty of criticisms to consider and revisions to be made. Finally, I ask that you not share this with anyone else. Thank you.
